Sacramento; 17 years in the industry

Big Blue, Marquis, Money B

Where did you grow up, and what was it like there?

I grew up in a couple spots the early years to 15 in Southern California, Garden Grove to be precise. We were close to Disneyland, the Beach and baseball. These were the things I remember most. Spent my later teenage years in Northern California, Redding and that was quite the culture shock for a Socal Kid. Redding was a bit more country and I really learned how to make relationships there because when I moved there, I only knew the three women I lived with, Mom, Sister and Grandma. It was definitely where I grew and became who I am today, with that being said, I left my first chance and landed in Sacramento, where I have been for 20 years now.

Favorite childhood memory?

Hanging out with my cousin Jeff. Going to the beach, cruisin' in the car being wild and goofy, going to baseball games both Dodgers and Angels. We spent a lot of time at my Aunt and Uncle's house swimming and bbqing.

Where do you work & what do you there?

I currently like to say I have 5 jobs. My main job as a Husband and Father is a pretty big one, I have two beautiful little girls, Lucy and Eleanor and a very amazing and supportive Wife, Emily. Without them nothing else matters! For the past 2 years I have worked full time for Pacific Edge Wine & Spirits as a Spirits Specialist in the Greater Sacramento area covering on and off premise accounts from Fairfield to Nevada City and Placerville, it's been amazing! I still get behind the stick once a week every Friday night working at Midtown Sacramento's most amazing little gem, Tres Hermanas and I love it. Continuing to work with the USBG our Local Sacramento Chapter I spent 2 years as Treasurer and 2 years as VP. Now I currently am a member of the Transparency Task Force for the USBG. And, my last current position I work as an Event Coordinator for a group of Culinary Madmen known as "We The Freaks," an amazing and talented group of Sacramento Chefs that love what they do and also to have fun!

What is the most rewarding part of your career?

Man, I always knew I wanted to have fun in whatever I did, so being in the Hospitality industry is perfect. I get to help people have FUN! Either through bartending and entertaining, educating and training, bringing a rolly bag of fun through the doors, or planning events where people are enjoying themselves. That is the truly rewarding part of my career. It takes a lot more work than sliding a drink across the bartop these days, but I don't forget my roots. I always got joy from making a delicious cocktail and seeing my guests eyes light up. That always made my day! Now being able to transition to another position in the industry my payoff now is being able to have nights at home with my family and having weekends off, yeah that sounds crazy I bet!

What is your favorite bartending moment?

Man, there are so many! I guess one of them was probably being selected as the Sacramento Representative for Portland Cocktail Week in 2014. That trip was definitely the time where I felt like I made the right decision and career path. I crossed paths with the industries best and made so many new friends. It definitely changed the way I looked at Bartending and drove me to be more successful.

What do you do to relax outside of work?

Swimming with my kids, listening to music and bbqing! That is my zen time, Sunday Pool Parties at the Neuhauser's can be the best way to start a busy week.

Tell us about your dream vacation.

I have two, the first one is a lifelong dream vacation that involves an RV, and a road trip to every Major League baseball stadium, obviously watching games in them as well! Second, I would love to head back to Europe. I was really introduced to so much culture and history that it definitely open my mind and molded me to be the guy I am today. I would love to head back and travel all over Europe with my wife and enjoy all the different cultures and history as a middle-aged human. I partied my ass off there the first time and would love to head back and enjoy and relax instead of getting crazy! Haha!

Favorite quote:

"You never get anything in life without asking for it."

This was once said by one of my first bosses in college from Champs Sports. I still live by those words and it has worked out for me, for the most part.

Advice you could offer to others:

Be nice to people, treat them with respect and how you would want to be treated. Smile and enjoy life!

Who do you look up to and why?

My Mom, most definitely. She pretty much raised my sister and I by herself and we didn't have a lot of money. She always made sure we had what we needed, she worked extremely hard for the little money she made. She went back to College when she was in her 40's and Graduated. She is a kind, funny and extremely loving lady. Now, 74 years old, she is constantly battling Type 2 Diabetes and has done an amazing job keeping herself healthy. She also still teaches elementary school and has an amazing outlook on life!

Tell us something unusual or unique about yourself that we might not know.

I have the gift of giving the best hugs! Maybe some of you know that!

What does the future hold for you?

I see myself eventually owning my own place once my kids get a little older. Me, my wife, a bbq and apron, smoking sausages and drinking a half liter of brew. Delivering delicious food and beverages to my guests, talking, laughing and enjoying the outdoors. This all while preferably being near the ocean or a body of water of some kind.

What's your favorite part of

Being able to hang out and work with people who also like to have fun, who are excited about this industry and being a part of something more than just a job. Diving into education and training that helps further our careers and to set the bar a little higher for our community. Being challenged and driven by like minded and motivated people as well as surrounding myself with positivity.

What is your favorite joke?

OH GOD! Here it is, don't hate me! Ok, so a Polar Bear walks into a bar and asks for a "Gin...........................................................................................................................................................& Tonic"

The bartender looks at the bear and says, "Why the long pause?"

Polar bear reaches to the sky and says, "I was born with them!!"

What is your favorite word?

What turns you on?

Good vibes, good music, good people!

Did you go to bartending school?

What other profession would you like to attempt?

I would love to be a Captain of a Parasailing Boat! That would be a lot of fun!

What other profession would you never try?

Professional Eating, that is gross!

What personal attribute of yours do you most appreciate?

Keeping a positive outlook on life and trying to have it rub off to the people that surround me.

If Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the pearly gates?
