Into the Fault Line
Balcones Distilling Educational Experience In Partnership with the USBG
Exploring the intersection of craftsmanship and climate, Into the Fault Line brought a group of Texas bartenders and cocktail enthusiasts on an immersive journey with Balcones Distillery in Waco, Texas. Over two packed days in February, attendees engaged in hands-on workshops, exclusive tastings, and deep discussions on the impact of regional environments on whiskey.
Day 1: Welcome to Waco & Balcones Immersion
The program kicked off with a warm welcome at Aloft Hotel before attendees made their way to Balcones Distillery. The evening set the stage with a happy hour, a curated dinner experience, and an introduction to the legacy and innovation behind Balcones’ award-winning American Single Malt Whiskey.
To close out the night, guests had the option to continue the conversation at Sloane’s, where the nightcap was as much about camaraderie as it was about spirits.
Day 2: Distillery Deep Dive & The Rhythms of Texas
Day two started bright and early with a full schedule at Balcones Distillery. After breakfast, attendees toured the distillery, gaining insight into the production process, from fermentation to barrel aging. A guided tasting and cocktail class explored the Balcones portfolio, emphasizing how different factors shape the final flavor profile.
The afternoon was dedicated to the Lineage Blending Workshop, where participants took on the challenge of replicating Balcones’ signature Lineage whiskey using different single malt expressions. The session underscored how aging conditions, grain selection, and barrel treatments impact taste. The workshop also introduced the Rhythms of Texas—a discussion on how local climate influences the maturation process, reinforcing the idea that place is just as important as process in whiskey-making.
After a well-earned break, the program concluded with a celebratory dinner and send-off party, where attendees reflected on their learnings, shared insights, and raised a glass to new friendships and future collaborations.
Looking Ahead
Into the Fault Line wasn’t just about whiskey—it was about understanding the nuances that make each bottle unique. From hands-on blending exercises to conversations with industry peers, the experience deepened participants' appreciation for the complexities of whiskey production and the role of regional influence.
One participant said, “I enjoyed the in-depth tours and presentations, which gave me a better understanding of the complexities in producing single malt whisky, as well as a deeper connection with the brand by exposure to its history and the people working there. Everyone I interacted with was passionate about what they did, while being open to answering questions without any hesitation.”
Another participant felt that the climate class was the highlight of their experience, stating, “It really showcased how and why Texas whisky is different.”
With a mix of education, networking, and interactive sessions, the program exemplified the USBG’s commitment to fostering growth and innovation within the beverage industry.
